How to make the McDonalds Filet-O-Fish VEGAN

Vegan Filet O Fish

Today I wanted to see if I could make the Mcdonald’s fish filet sandwich vegan, but really easy! I’ll be using the Gardein brand fish less filets. This is going to come together really quick! The package comes with six filets so I am going to turn those into three mcdonald’s patties! If you like this recipe be sure to check out this one too! and this one!

Filet Prep

The first thing you want to do is let the filets thaw. I’ll be removing the bread, just by slicing it off. Once the coatings are all off we need to combine them, to do that we need tapioca starch. I am going to use about a teaspoon of the tapioca starch and mix it with some hot water. When I have that all mixed together I take two of the filets and dip them into the starch then stick them together. I press them together so that they stay. I use parchment paper to individually wrap them up.

Breading

Then into the freezer they go for just a little bit. While we wait for the fish filets to firm up, let’s make some tartar sauce. I add a quarter cup of vegan mayo to a little bowl. Then I mince about two tablespoons worth of sweet pickles as well as about a teaspoon or two of onion and some capers. I also add a teaspoon of plant based milk, a touch of dried parsley, lemon juice, and agave. Give it a mix and taste! If it tastes right, toss it into the fridge for now! To nail down our fish filet breading we are going to be using egg replacer.

Frying

I add about one tablespoon of egg replacer to a large bowl with about two or two and a half tablespoons of water. Whisk that together then I add some black pepper, salt, few drops lemon juice, two tablespoons flour, whisk again! Then I slowly whisk in some plant based milk. Until we have almost a waffle batter consistency. Now I’m going to heat some oil in a skillet. While that is heating I throw some plain bread crumbs into a bowl, take the mostly frozen fish filets and drop them into the wet mixture then in your bread crumbs! Then we are going to drop them into the frying pan until they are golden brown.

Tasting!

I add a half slice of cheese to the bun, then the filet patty, topped with a spoonful of tartar sauce! It looks perfect! Give it a taste and it tastes just like the McDonald’s fish filet sandwich! The patty is flakey, and it really tastes like fish! You have to give this a try! Watch the full video here!
