Carrot Bacon
For the longest time I was known as the veggie bacon guy. I made bacon from mushrooms, radish, from rice paper, from seitan, I’ve made bacon from just about everything, including carrots. Carrot bacon has taken the internet by storm because of a viral video from Tabitha Brown where she made carrot bacon on Tiktok. Hers is very similar to some I’ve made in the past. But today I want to try her recipe exactly! I think it’s going to be pretty good, let’s see how it comes out. If you like this recipe, check out this one too! and this one!
Bacon It Up
I wash and then peel thick strips of my carrot. Tabitha uses two carrots, but once I peeled my first carrot I realized it was plenty. The carrot slices have nice coloring and striping to them, very similar to bacon. Now for our seasonings. In a bowl I add about a third of a cup of maple syrup, a teaspoon of smoked paprika, half teaspoon garlic powder, half a teaspoon of liquid smoke, and fresh cracked black pepper. Give that a good mix. Next add in the carrots strips, make sure they are evenly coated. Let them sit for about two minutes. Tabitha uses an air fryer so I preheat mine to 380ºf. And she uses a spray oil but I don’t have any so I use regular oil to oil up the air fryer.
Let’s Try It!
I add in the carrot slices one layer at a time. So it will take a few batches to finish them. Cook them for five minutes and let them crisp up! After they cook I gently put them onto a paper towel. Then they are ready to try! This tastes like carrot-y bacon. There are some soft pieces that are like fatty spots and there are crispy pieces. Watch the full video here!
