The WORST or BEST Vegan Burger I’ve EVER Reviewed???

New Beyond Burger

Is the new Beyond Burger the best vegan burger I’ve ever reviewed? Did they finally make a burger that got rid of that Beyond taste? Is it healthier? I wanted to find out. There’s a lot of mixed reviews out there when it comes to the health of vegan burgers. You can find lots of articles that say that plant-based burgers are healthier than ground beef, and you can find lots of science that says that it is not. If you like this recipe, be sure to check out this one too! and this one!

Plant-based Beef

Some people fear the amount of ingredients that are in plant-based beef. Commonly plant-based beef has a dozen or more ingredients. According to an article published in Harvard Health “plant-based burgers are a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.” but are typically “heavily processed and high in saturated fat”. This is where the new Beyond Burger comes in. It has 75% less saturated fat than that of an 80/20 ground beef burger. Also they claim they were able to make it meatier and juicier, while reducing that fat. They were able to do that by using avocado oil. The old version uses coconut oil and canola oil.

Make Our Burgers

I want to compare the taste and texture of the old Beyond Burger to the new Beyond Burger. For this taste test, I’m going to make two four ounce patties, one from the old burger and one from the new. I’m using a ring mold, some parchment paper, and a lid from a jar to make these nice and even, the same size. I also wanted to see how these would roll, like meatballs. They rolled almost exactly the same. I’m gonna use these little meatballs to make smash burgers (as plant-based burgers are notoriously bad at doing that).

Time To Cook

I season them all exactly the same, a little garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper, on both sides. I cook them according to the package instructions. Which starts with heating up a skillet to a medium/high heat. Add some oil and cook the patties for about four minutes on each side. I know my stove gets hot but my burgers burnt after being on for four minutes. They were not testable now so I quickly made some new patties, turned down the heat, and paid attention to them a little more. They cooked better this time.

Taste Test

Now let’s cook our smash burgers. The new burger held together really well, it looked great. The old version is still held together but you can see it’s drier. I tossed these on a bun and wanted to keep them fairly plain but I added on a bit of my Not Steak Sauce. Is the new Beyond Burger any good? Beyond finally got rid of the Beyond taste! Which is a good thing. The texture on the new burger is so much better. But the old burger is juicier. The smash burger has a good bite, good chew, and it stayed juicy. It’s not dry, which is the problem with the old burgers. Even the smash burgers came out better! I’d say this is the best Beyond Burger yet! Watch full video here!
